Restorative dentistry

Restorative dentistry aims to protect natural teeth and repair damaged tissue.

Book a consultation

Restorative dentistry aims to protect natural teeth and repair damaged tissue. A filling is one tool, but care begins by identifying the cause of the problem. Cleaning, eating habits and factors that increase the risk of further damage also matter.

Not every change needs drilling

Early decay can sometimes be arrested with preventive measures. A cavity that needs restoration requires a different approach. Examination considers the extent of damage, existing filling margins and pulp health. Surface colour alone is not enough for a diagnosis.

Restoration suited to the tooth

The material and technique depend on the location and size of the defect. We restore shape, contact with the neighbouring tooth and biting function. When damage is extensive, a conventional filling may not provide enough protection, and other options are discussed.

What to explain at your visit

Notice whether the tooth reacts to cold, sweet foods or pressure, or hurts without a trigger. Describe how long symptoms last. If a new filling interferes with biting, arrange a review rather than waiting for it to adjust itself.

Protection after treatment

Advice on cleaning, fluoride and reviews is matched to your risk. Repairing one cavity does not remove the causes of decay. Another aim is to reduce future treatment needs through everyday habits that you can realistically maintain.
